Why does hair grow?

Animals such as dogs, cats and sheep have hair all over their body. What is the function of their hair?

Hair protects our bodies from the cold.
Some animals change their coats in summer and winter to adjust their body temperature. We humans wear more clothes to get warmer in winter compared to summer. In the same way, our body hair protects skin from sunlight and repels the rain.
It protects us from sources of illness, too. Have you ever shivered when your hair was touched? This is because hair has the ability to sense without touching, just like a cat’s whiskers.

Humans don’t need hair anymore?

Humans used to have hair over their entire body to protect them from the cold.

Over many years, the lifestyle of humans changed and our body hair gradually became less.
But head hair, eyebrows, eyelashes, and nose hair still remained to protect the important parts. Some hair such as armpit hair tends to grow when you enter adulthood.
We wear clothes to protect our body and adjust our body temperature. That’s why we humans don’t have problems even without arm or leg hair. In the future, people may have even less hair!

Leaving hair is good too!

Our skin color, eye color and shape, voice, the color and volume of hair, height, body shape, length and shape of arm and legs......everything is different.

All these features are what build our unique personailites. It is normal that our body hair grows differently too. The way hair grows is different, too.
Unlike scalp hair or nails, hair on our arms and legs don't keep on growing. So, it’s fine to leave body hair alone.
But just like some people want short hair or long hair on their head, you can have less or thinner body hair if you want to. In that case, please talk to a parent or guardian first and choose a hair-removal method that doesn’t damage your skin.
